Best Multipurpose WordPress Themes: 10 Compared

The short version
For one site with a fixed budget, buy Enfold ($59, 271,761 sales, updated 3 September 2026 and the most-reviewed theme here at 11K ratings) or BeTheme ($69, 336,825 sales, updated 3 September 2026). For an online store, Flatsome ($59) is the multipurpose theme built around WooCommerce. For several sites, Divi at $89 a year or $249 lifetime covers unlimited installs. If you want speed and no bundled builder, start with Astra (free). One thing to avoid: buying Salient on the strength of its demos alone – it had gone 95 days without a release when we checked, by far the longest gap in the table.
Prices, sales, ratings and update dates read from ThemeForest, WordPress.org and elegantthemes.com on 4 September 2026.
A multipurpose WordPress theme ships with dozens or hundreds of importable demo sites and a page builder, so one licence can become a law firm site, a restaurant or a store. The category is dominated by a handful of ThemeForest themes with six-figure sales, plus Divi and the free Astra. This page compares them by the job you are hiring them for.
What matters in a multipurpose theme
Four things separate these themes in practice. First, the builder: most bundle WPBakery, some have a custom or inbuilt drag and drop builder, and the newer ones are built for Elementor. Second, the vendor’s size, which decides how fast bugs get fixed after a WordPress or WooCommerce release. Third, page weight: a theme that loads a slider, an icon font and a parallax effect everywhere will be slower than one that loads only what a page uses. Fourth, licensing: ThemeForest is one site per licence with six months of support; Divi and Astra Pro are unlimited.
Multipurpose WordPress themes compared
The “days since update” column is ours: the days from each theme’s last published release to 4 September 2026. Nobody else publishes it, and it is the quickest way to see which vendors are actually shipping.

Read 4 September 2026: The7, BeTheme, Enfold, Flatsome and Impreza from their themeforest.net item pages, and Astra from wordpress.org/themes/astra. Bridge, JupiterX, Salient and Divi carry figures read on 2 September 2026, dated in the cells – we did not re-open those pages today. Envato rounds rating counts above 1,000 (“9.3K”). Bridge and JupiterX display no version number, and Enfold’s listing dates its last update 3 September 2026 while still labelling the release v7.1.3, so we give the date only. The Impreza item URL we previously held now returns HTTP 410; the live listing has a different item ID, which we followed and re-read today. Astra’s page publishes installs, not sales; Divi’s publishes neither.
The figure nobody publishes: four themes hold 63% of the category
Add the lifetime sales of the eight ThemeForest themes in the table – The7 337,177, BeTheme 336,825, Enfold 271,761, Flatsome 269,737, Bridge 224,000, JupiterX 184,112, Salient 171,225, Impreza 120,166 – and you get 1,915,003 licences. The top four alone account for 1,215,500 of them, or 63.5%.
Derivation: the eight sales figures summed (five read 4 September 2026, three on 2 September 2026); the four largest divided by the total, 1,215,500 / 1,915,003 = 0.635. Concentration is what buys you support: inside that top four you get the largest community, the most third-party tutorials and the best odds a plugin developer has tested against your theme. It also means your demo is on a lot of other sites.
One site, maximum choice: BeTheme, The7 or Enfold
BeTheme is the verdict if you want the widest set of starting points. It claims more than 700 pre-built websites, has 336,825 sales and shipped version 28.5.9 the day before we checked. Its own BeBuilder has replaced the WPBakery dependency of earlier versions, which makes it lighter than it used to be. The7 is fractionally ahead on sales (337,177) and stronger if you want a design system you control from one panel; its 4.75 rating is the lowest in the table, mostly from older reviews about complexity. Enfold is the quiet choice: $59, 271,761 sales, 11K ratings – the most of any theme here – an update on 3 September 2026, and its own Advanced Layout Builder, which has been stable for a decade. It is WooCommerce ready and integrates with WPML for multi-language integration.
Online stores: Flatsome
Flatsome is the multipurpose theme that is really a WooCommerce theme with multipurpose demos attached. It has 269,737 sales, a 4.83 rating from 8.1K reviewers, a built-in slider and its own UX Builder rather than a bundled third-party one. If the site’s main job is selling, pick it over BeTheme. AliDropship also lists it as a compatible theme for dropshipping stores.
Creative and agency sites: Bridge, Salient, Impreza, Uncode, TheGem
Impreza has the highest rating of any ThemeForest theme on this page (4.88 from 2.6K) and is the one we would pick for a portfolio or agency site that also needs to load fast; version 9.2.3 shipped on 11 August 2026. Bridge (224,000 sales) has the largest creative demo library and was updated on 7 August 2026. Salient ($60) is the animation specialist, with its own Salient WPBakery build, but its last update on 1 June 2026 is the oldest here at 95 days – we would want to see a release before spending on it. Uncode (affiliate) and The Gem (affiliate) sit in the same space; The Gem runs on the Visual Composer page Builder (affiliate) lineage and bundles Slider Revolution. We did not verify Uncode or The Gem on 4 September 2026.
Elementor-first: JupiterX, Phlox Pro, Ave
If you already work in the Elementor page builder (affiliate), pick a theme that treats it as the primary tool rather than a compatibility checkbox. JupiterX ($58, 184,112 sales, updated 13 August 2026) is the biggest of them and its version 4 replaced several third-party dependencies with native features. Phlox Pro (affiliate) offers 30-plus Elementor demos and is popular with freelancers. Ave (affiliate) is a design-heavy Elementor theme with its own live customizer. Phlox Pro and Ave were not verified this month.
Several sites on one licence: Divi
Divi (affiliate) is priced differently from everything else here: $89 a year or $249 for a lifetime licence, read from elegantthemes.com on 2 September 2026, and both cover unlimited websites. For an agency running ten client sites that is a fraction of ten ThemeForest licences. Its front-end Divi Builder has hundreds of modules, and every module adds CSS and JavaScript to the page – the usual explanation when a Divi build feels sluggish; we separate that from hosting and plugin causes in why is my Divi site so slow. Layouts import through the Divi Library, not the standard WordPress importer: see how to import Divi layouts and the full review of Divi.
Free and lightweight: Astra
Astra (affiliate) is free, has over a million active installs and a 4.9 rating from 6,518 reviews on WordPress.org (read 4 September 2026), and comes with free starter templates you can import without spending anything. It has no bundled builder, which is why it is fast, and it works with Elementor, Beaver Builder and the block editor. Blocksy competes on the same free-first footing with a slightly richer free feature set, and our Blocksy review sets out what its free version leaves out and at what point Pro pays for itself.
Themify Ultra (we use this on WPNeon)
Ultra (affiliate) is Themify’s flagship and the theme this site runs on. It comes with the Free Themify builder, a large set of skins and demo layouts, and is included in Themify’s $89-a-year club. Themify publishes neither sales nor update dates, so it is not in the table. Our full review of Ultra covers where its builder falls behind Elementor.
The rest of the field
These entries are still sold as far as we can tell, but we did not verify price, version or update date on 4 September 2026.
- Total (affiliate), a WPBakery-based theme with a strong theme-options panel.
- Lead Engine (affiliate), built for landing pages and lead capture.
- Crocal (affiliate), bundling WPBakery, Slider Revolution and an icon pack.
- Independent (affiliate), a blog and magazine multipurpose theme with 17-plus demos.
- Monstroid2 from Zemez (vendor page), an Elementor-based theme; see our Monstroid2 review.
- Calypso, which no longer has a working vendor link we can confirm.
If you would rather buy a club membership than one theme, MyThemeShop (affiliate), Templatic (affiliate) and Themify (affiliate) each sell all their themes for one price. Only Themify’s ($89 a year) was verified, on 2 September 2026; a MyThemeShop URL we checked that day redirected to an unrelated product.
Where multipurpose themes lose
- Weight by default. A demo import from BeTheme, The7 or Bridge loads a slider, a builder, an icon font and often a dozen plugins. You will spend the first day switching things off. Astra and Impreza start lighter.
- One site per licence. Every ThemeForest theme here is a single-site licence with six months of support; support renewals are extra. Divi and Themify’s club are unlimited. On a three-site project, Divi’s $249 lifetime is cheaper than three $69 licences with renewals.
- Builder lock-in. Enfold, Flatsome and BeTheme each store layouts in their own builder’s format. Moving to another theme means rebuilding, not re-skinning.
- Demo sameness. Nearly two million licences means your demo is on thousands of other sites. The theme is a starting point, not a design.
- Uneven cadence inside one category. Two themes here shipped a release the day before we looked; Salient had not shipped one in 95 days. A big sales number does not guarantee current code.
- Unverified entries. Ten of the 21 themes named on this page were not checked this month. The dated table rows are the ones we stand behind today.
Our picks, and how to buy them
Affiliate disclosure: the buttons below are affiliate links. WPNeon earns a commission if you buy; you pay the same price.
One site, many demos: BeTheme, $69 (affiliate). A store: Flatsome, $59 (affiliate). Several sites: Divi, $89 a year (affiliate). No budget: Astra, free (affiliate). For niche-specific lists built on the same themes, see our agriculture themes and dropshipping themes comparisons, or the Themes hub.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best multipurpose WordPress theme?
For a single site, Enfold ($59) or BeTheme ($69): both have more than 270,000 sales, both shipped a release on 3 September 2026, and Enfold has the most ratings of any theme we checked at 11K. For a store, Flatsome ($59). For several sites, Divi at $89 a year or $249 lifetime. All figures read on 4 September 2026 except Divi’s, read on 2 September 2026.
Is a multipurpose theme slower than a niche theme?
Usually, out of the box. Multipurpose themes bundle builders, sliders and icon fonts that every page loads unless you disable them. After configuration the gap narrows, and lighter options such as Astra or Impreza can match a niche theme. We have not benchmarked the themes on this page ourselves; this is a design assessment.
Which multipurpose theme is best for WooCommerce?
Flatsome. It was designed as a WooCommerce theme first and has 269,737 sales and a 4.83 rating from 8.1K reviews as of 4 September 2026. BeTheme, The7 and Enfold all support WooCommerce, but their shop templates are one demo among hundreds rather than the core of the theme.
Is Divi worth it compared with a ThemeForest theme?
Yes if you run more than one site, or plan to. Divi’s $89-a-year and $249-lifetime licences cover unlimited websites, while every ThemeForest theme here is licensed per site. For a single site with no plans to expand, a $59 to $69 ThemeForest theme is cheaper over the first two years.
Can I use a free theme instead?
Yes. Astra is free, has more than a million active installs and a 4.9 rating from 6,518 reviews, and its starter templates cover most common site types. You give up the hundreds of bundled demos and the single-vendor support desk, and you will add a page builder yourself. For a first site with no budget, that is a reasonable trade.
