Blocksy Theme Review: Free vs Pro Compared

The short version
Blocksy is the right free theme for a WooCommerce store, or a content site that wants a drag-and-drop header and footer without a page builder. Free theme plus free Companion plugin covers a blog or small business site. Pro is worth it on a store, because quick view, wishlist, swatches and filters are gated behind it: $69, $99 or $149 a year for 1, 10 or unlimited sites, or $199, $299 or $499 once. What Blocksy is: a theme, a plugin and a licence
Blocksy is a free WordPress theme by Creative Themes. On the WordPress.org directory, read 2 September 2026, it is at version 2.1.55, was last updated on 27 August 2026, has 300,000+ active installations and a 5-out-of-5 rating from 872 reviews. It requires WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.0.
Three pieces make up the product, and the distinction matters when you compare it with other themes:
- Blocksy (theme). The free theme from the directory: the Customizer-based header and footer builder, layout controls, the typography and colour system and the base WooCommerce templates.
- Blocksy Companion (plugin). A free plugin from the same vendor. It adds the starter-site importer and the free extensions such as the cookie notice, newsletter box and trending posts. Without Companion you get a working theme but no starter sites.
- Blocksy Pro (licence). Paid. It unlocks the Pro extensions inside Companion rather than replacing the theme. The vendor’s pricing page lists what every paid tier adds as: all Pro starter sites, the Shop extension, the Post Types extension and White Label. The full list is in the table below.
Blocksy is not a block (full-site-editing) theme. Layout decisions live in the Customizer with a live preview; the theme ships its own blocks (dynamic data, advanced posts, breadcrumbs, share box) for the block editor. The vendor lists Gutenberg, Elementor, Brizy and Beaver Builder as compatible. Pairing Blocksy with Beaver Builder is the theme-plus-plugin model, as opposed to Divi’s everything-in-one-theme approach; we weigh the two on cost, speed and lock-in in how Beaver Builder compares with Divi.
Blocksy Free vs Pro: what each tier costs and adds
Every paid tier includes the same features. Personal, Business and Agency differ only in the number of sites covered. Annual licences include one year of updates and support; lifetime licences include both indefinitely.

When the lifetime licence pays back
Personal: $199 once against $69 a year. Two years annual is $138, three years is $207. Lifetime is cheaper from the third year (break-even at 2.9 years).
Business: $299 once against $99 a year. Three years annual is $297, which is $2 cheaper than lifetime. Lifetime only wins from the fourth year (break-even at 3.0 years).
Agency: $499 once against $149 a year. Three years is $447, four years is $596. Lifetime wins from the fourth year (break-even at 3.3 years).
Per site: on Business, $99 a year across 10 sites is $9.90 per site per year, or $29.90 per site on the lifetime licence.
The rule: buy annual for a site you are not sure about, lifetime only if it will stay on Blocksy for three years or more. The same annual-versus-lifetime arithmetic applies to Divi, whose $89-a-year or $249-lifetime membership we work through in our review of Divi 5. The 14-day refund window is short, so test the free theme first and buy Pro when a gated feature is actually blocking you.
Performance: what Blocksy exposes, and what nobody has measured here yet
The vendor’s homepage says Blocksy “feels fast and numbers confirm that, it is ranked at the top in most speed testing tools”. No figure is published: no page weight, no request count, no Lighthouse or PageSpeed score. The only number on the pricing page is a customer testimonial claiming load times “of less than 1.5 seconds”, which is a user’s report, not a vendor measurement. We have not benchmarked it for this review. What can be stated without a benchmark is which levers the theme gives you. The controls that remove requests are the ones that matter:
- Font loading. Google Fonts can be hosted locally, removing the third-party font request; that is a Pro extension. System-font stacks are in the free typography controls.
- Script toggles. The emoji script can be switched off from the theme rather than with a separate plugin.
- Element-level loading. Because header, footer and sidebars are built from discrete elements, an element you do not add is not rendered. That is a structural advantage over themes that output every header option’s markup and hide it.
The PHP 7.0 minimum is unusually low for a theme updated in August 2026. It means Blocksy installs on old hosting; it is a compatibility signal, not a performance one. The opposite case is the one to watch for: a free theme that has not been updated in years, like Candour, a retired blog theme with no further releases, may declare an old PHP minimum and still fail on PHP 8 because nobody has tested it there.
WooCommerce support: where the free/Pro line falls
This is the section that decides whether Pro is worth it. The free theme gives you styled shop, category and single-product templates, a cart element in the header, and control over product-grid columns and archive layout. That is enough for a catalogue site or a small store that is happy with the default product page.
Everything that changes how a customer moves through the store is Pro, per the vendor’s Shop extension list: AJAX add to cart, quick view, wishlist, compare, swatches, off-canvas filters, floating cart, free-shipping bar, stock scarcity, sale countdown, custom thank-you pages, search by SKU and Dokan multi-vendor support. Several can be replaced with free plugins, but each plugin is another script and another vendor. On a store, the $69 Personal licence is cheaper than the plugin stack it replaces, which is why the verdict says yes to Pro for stores and no for blogs.
Where Blocksy loses
1. A smaller ecosystem than Astra, and fewer installs than Kadence or GeneratePress

Blocksy has the smallest install base of the four and roughly one seventh of Astra’s review count: fewer third-party tutorials, fewer agency staff who already know it, fewer starter templates from anyone but the vendor. The rating is not the problem: 862 of Blocksy’s 872 reviews are five stars and four are one star, a lower one-star share (0.5%) than Astra’s (104 of 6,517, 1.6%). The ecosystem is.
2. The features a store needs are all Pro
Astra and Kadence also gate shop features, so this is not unique to Blocksy, but Blocksy’s free WooCommerce layer is thinner than its marketing suggests. If swatches, wishlist or filters are must-haves, budget for Pro from day one rather than discovering the gate after the site is built.
3. Two components to keep updated, plus a licence key
Theme, Companion plugin and Pro licence are three moving parts. A Companion update that lands before the matching theme update can surface warnings in the dashboard. GeneratePress, whose premium add-on is one plugin with the site library inside it, has fewer places to go wrong.
4. A Customizer theme in a Site Editor era
Blocksy’s option model is the classic one: global settings in the Customizer, page content in the block editor. That is stable and well understood, but it is not where WordPress core is investing. If you want header, footer and templates editable as blocks in the Site Editor, Blocksy is not that theme and does not claim to be.
5. Requires WordPress 6.7
Current builds require WordPress 6.7 or newer. A site pinned to an older core release cannot run the current theme version and will miss fixes until it is upgraded. Missing fixes is a temporary problem here; it becomes permanent with a theme that has stopped shipping them altogether, which is the situation our note on the discontinued Bubbly blog theme is written for.
6. The lifetime licence is a slow saver
Business lifetime does not beat annual until year four. A vendor that changes its pricing or product in that window changes your maths.
Who should pick Astra, Kadence or GeneratePress instead
- Pick Astra if you are handing the site to a client or team who may not know Blocksy, or want the largest pool of third-party templates and tutorials. Its 1+ million installations are the reason. Our GeneratePress vs Astra comparison sets out where each wins.

- Pick GeneratePress if you want the leanest option and will build layouts yourself. Its directory listing had not been updated since 1 December 2025 when read on 2 September 2026; check before choosing it.
- Stay with Blocksy if the header and footer builder, the Customizer live preview and the Pro shop set are what you want and you can live with the smaller ecosystem.
Verdict
Blocksy free is a complete theme for a blog or small business site, and one of the better free WooCommerce starting points. Blocksy Pro is a sensible purchase for a store, or for an agency that will use White Label and the starter-site library across ten or more sites. It is a poor purchase for a single blog that only wants a nicer header, because the free builder already does that.

Is Blocksy Pro worth it?

Should I buy Blocksy Pro annual or lifetime?
Personal lifetime ($199) is cheaper than annual ($69) from the third year. Business lifetime ($299) and Agency lifetime ($499) only beat annual from the fourth year. Buy annual unless you are confident the site stays on Blocksy for three years or more.
Is Blocksy a block theme (full-site editing)?
