Which WordPress themes for artists are worth comparing?

Ten options survive verification against ThemeForest, WordPress.org and the vendors’ own pages. Five are paid creative themes that include a portfolio post type and a lightbox. Three are free bases with large install counts. One is Divi, sold direct with a Projects post type and two portfolio modules. One is not a theme purchase at all: the default WordPress theme plus the Gallery block, which has had a lightbox built in since the block gained its “Enlarge on click” setting.

Which WordPress theme for artists fits what you need the site to do?

A painter who wants a clean grid, an illustrator selling A3 prints in three sizes, and a portrait artist taking commissions by enquiry are asking three different questions. Set what the site must do, what you will spend and the editor you already know, and the widget names one theme with the reason, and flags where your budget and your needs do not meet.

How current is each artist theme, and does “artist theme” even mean anything?

Two numbers that no roundup for this query prints. The first is how long each theme has gone without a release, counted from 10 September 2026, and which WordPress version its listing claims. A portfolio theme that has not shipped in most of a year is the one whose lightbox breaks on the next WordPress update.

Stockholm and Rife Free are the two to weigh carefully: 258 and 224 days without a release. Oshine’s listing claims WordPress 6.0 to 6.9 and Kalium’s stops at 6.8, while Bridge, Stockholm and Mintus claim 7.0. A compatibility field is a vendor statement rather than a guarantee, but a listing that has not been told about the WordPress release you are running is worth an email to the author before you buy.

The second number is about the phrase itself. ThemeForest’s own Art category holds 37 themes, and its best seller, ART by SeaTheme, has 2,900 sales and 58 ratings. Bridge alone has 224,037 sales, 77 times as many, and Oshine’s 38,200 is 13 times as many. The themes that artists actually buy are the creative multipurpose themes with a portfolio post type, not the ones with “artist” in the title, and that is why this page compares the former and treats the Art category as the place to browse, not the place to buy.

What does an artist website need from a WordPress theme?

A portfolio post type. A theme that registers portfolio items gives each piece its own page with a gallery, categories for medium or series, and an index that filters. Without one, every project is a blog post pretending. Oshine, Kalium, Bridge, Stockholm, Mintus, Rife Free and Divi include one; Astra and Blocksy do not, which is why the chooser pairs them with Gallery blocks or Elementor’s widgets.

A lightbox that respects the file. Clicking a thumbnail should open the full image, move through the set with arrows, and not squash a tall canvas into a wide box. Right-click protection, honestly described. Rife’s Pro tier lists password protection and photo proofing; some plugins disable right-click. Treat these as deterrents only. Any image a browser can display, a visitor can save through the developer tools, a screenshot or the cache. Upload at the resolution you are willing to lose, watermark what you must, and register copyright on what matters.

WooCommerce styling, if prints are ever likely. Retrofitting a shop onto a theme that ignores WooCommerce is the most common rebuild an artist site goes through. Every theme on this page lists WooCommerce compatibility, but only Kalium bundles a product filter and a size guide, and only Blocksy’s free listing claims advanced WooCommerce support. Oshine by Brand Exponents is $69 on ThemeForest with about 38,200 sales, a 4.80 rating from around 1,700 ratings and a release on 15 July 2026 at version 7.3.1; its listing claims WordPress 6.0 to 6.9. It ships 62 demos, more than 30 individual portfolio styles, one-to-five-column, masonry and metro grids, more than 10 hover styles, a lightbox with pinch and swipe, and lazy loading in portfolios, galleries and the image module. The limitation is TATSU, its own builder: layouts you make belong to this theme, and moving theme later means rebuilding pages. The compatibility field also stops at 6.9.

Suits: an artist who wants a gallery-wall look and work of uneven proportions.

Stockholm is $69 with 35,213 sales, a 4.70 rating from around 1,400 ratings and a release on 26 December 2025; its listing claims WordPress 6.0 to 7.0 and WooCommerce 9 and 10. It includes a portfolio post type with masonry in regular and Pinterest style, a gallery layout, a slider and a carousel, plus a lightbox, and it bundles WPBakery, LayerSlider, Slider Revolution and a timetable plugin while also supporting Elementor and the block editor. The limitation is the 258-day release gap, the longest on this page. Buy it for the look, and ask the author about the next release first.

Portfolio first: Mintus, for illustrators who accept a tiny base

Suits: an illustrator or designer on a $39 budget who will test the demo hard.

Mintus by Edge-Themes is $39 with 180 sales and no rating displayed on its listing, released 5 May 2026 at version 1.5; the listing claims WordPress 6.5 to 7.0 and WooCommerce 9 and 10. It is built for illustration specifically: customisable portfolio list and single layouts in slider, gallery, masonry and full-width formats, category filtering, a portfolio image lightbox, and standard, load-more and infinite-scroll pagination. WPBakery and Slider Revolution are bundled.

The limitation is scale. With 180 buyers there is no public rating and no body of forum answers, so support response is unproven. It is the cheapest paid portfolio here, and that is the trade.

Portfolio first, free: Rife Free

Suits: an artist spending nothing who wants a portfolio that exists on install.

Rife Free by Apollo13Themes is free on WordPress.org at version 2.4.24, released 29 January 2026, with 20,000+ active installs and a 4.9 rating from 355 reviews; it requires WordPress 4.7 and PHP 5.3. The free theme ships portfolio works, a media manager for albums, masonry galleries with lazy loading, GIF and video support, seven importable designs, Elementor widgets and WooCommerce compatibility. Rife Pro is $39 a year for one site and adds more than 40 designs, the lightbox settings screen, photo proofing and password protection.

The limitation is the 224-day release gap and the free-versus-Pro line, which moves the lightbox controls, though not the lightbox, behind $39 a year.

Suits: an artist who wants no theme purchase and no page builder.

Twenty Twenty-Five ships with WordPress at version 1.5, released 20 May 2026, with 1 million+ active installs; it requires WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.2, is a block theme with full site editing and 16 style variations, and has a 3.9 rating from 13 reviews. The portfolio is two core blocks. A Gallery block with Enlarge on click switched on opens images in a lightbox with previous, next and close controls, and a Query Loop block over a “Work” category lists the pieces with featured images. Each piece is a post with its own gallery.

The limitation is that nothing is designed for you: no hover styles, no filterable index without a pattern or a plugin, and a review count too small to mean anything. It is also the only option on this page with nothing to renew and nothing to update beyond WordPress.

The limitation is weight: four bundled plugins behind a site that may hold twenty images. Install only what your demo needs.

Bridge is $69 with 224,037 sales, the most-bought theme on this page, a 4.74 rating from around 6,900 ratings and a release on 7 August 2026; its listing claims WordPress 5.3 to 7.0 and WooCommerce 7 to 10. It bundles WPBakery and supports Elementor and the block editor, ships more than 630 demos, and includes a portfolio post type with seven single and seven list layouts, a masonry gallery and a lightbox.

The limitation is choice: 630 demos is an evening lost. Pick one on day one and commit.

Portfolio and shop, free: Blocksy

Suits: an artist who works in the block editor and wants a free print shop that looks finished.

Blocksy is free on WordPress.org at version 2.1.56, released 3 September 2026, with 300,000+ active installs and a 5.0 rating from 872 reviews; it requires WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.0, and its listing claims advanced WooCommerce support and full block-editor compatibility. Suits: an artist who already works in Elementor and wants the largest support base available.

Astra is free at version 4.13.11, released 8 September 2026, with 1 million+ active installs and a 4.9 rating from 6,522 reviews; it requires WordPress 5.3 and PHP 5.3, and its listing names e-commerce support. The limitation is the same as Blocksy’s, and larger: no portfolio, no gallery of its own, and its listing mentions neither. The grid, the lightbox and the project page are all Elementor’s to build.

Suits: an artist who enjoys building pages and may build sites for other artists.

Divi is $89 a year or $249 once from Elegant Themes, both for unlimited sites, and the membership includes the Extra theme and the Bloom and Monarch plugins. The Divi Builder registers a Projects post type and ships a Portfolio module, a Filterable Portfolio module that sorts projects by category in block, flex or grid layouts, and a Gallery module. The limitation is page weight on an image-heavy site; we wrote about why Divi sites run slowly. The Filterable Portfolio documentation also does not mention a lightbox, so check the Gallery module against your set.

What about taking commissions or bookings?

No theme on this page does this, and none should. A commission is an enquiry with a few conditional questions: size, medium, deadline, budget, reference image. Fluent Forms is free on WordPress.org at version 6.2.13, updated in August 2026 and tested up to WordPress 7.1, with 700,000+ active installs and a 4.8 rating from 795 ratings; the free version stores entries, has conditional logic and takes Stripe payments for a deposit, while the file-upload field for reference images is Pro.
