Almost every WordPress soccer theme worth buying is a skin over the same free plugin: SportsPress by ThemeBoy, which produces the fixtures, results, auto-calculated league table and player statistics. Pick the theme for the design and the page builder, not for the match features, because the match features are the plugin’s. For a club site, FC United at $79 is the pick: Elementor, SportsPress, WooCommerce for the shirt shop, 2,452 sales and a 4.89 rating. Splash at $59 is the cheaper alternative. A club with no budget can run SportsPress on a free theme and pay nothing.

Which WordPress soccer themes are worth comparing?
Eight are worth a look. The table puts the price next to the two things that actually differ between them: which page builder you are committing to, and how many people have already bought and rated the theme. Sales and ratings are the only independent quality signal a marketplace theme gives you.

Why the plugin decides more than the theme
A football club site needs four things a normal WordPress theme cannot do: a fixture list that knows which match is next, results that feed a league table without you editing it by hand, a squad page where each player carries their own appearances and goals, and a season archive so last year does not vanish.
None of that is theme work. It is custom post types, a scoring engine and a standings calculation, and on WordPress it is nearly always the same plugin doing it. SportsPress, published free by ThemeBoy, is at version 2.7.31 with more than 10,000 active installations and a 4.7 rating from 369 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.0.4. It ships presets for more than twenty sports, soccer among them, and it does the fixtures, the automatic standings, the player statistics, the venues and the CSV import.
That has a practical consequence when you shop. Four of the eight themes above — FC United, Splash, Alchemists and Big Slam — are SportsPress themes. What you are buying from them is the design, the demo import and the page builder licence, not the match engine. It also means you can move between any two of them and keep your fixtures, because the data lives in the plugin.
The one check to run before you buy. Open the theme’s demo and look at the fixture list and the league table. If the vendor’s feature list says “SportsPress”, your data is portable and the plugin is free. If it describes its own match system, the fixtures are locked to that theme and leaving it later means re-entering every result by hand.
Real Soccer and Khelo are in the second group. That is not a fault — both sell well — but it is a cost you pay later rather than now.
Can you build a soccer website for free?
Yes, and it is a genuine option rather than a consolation prize. SportsPress is free and does the hard part. What you then need is a theme that does not fight it.
Two free routes work:
- SportsPress plus a general-purpose free theme. Astra, Kadence or GeneratePress will all render SportsPress output perfectly well, and you style the club’s colours in the Customizer. You lose the ready-made match-day design and you gain a site that is fast and that you can hand to anyone.
- Soccer Club from the WordPress.org directory. Free, version 1.4.5, last updated 10 June 2026, requiring WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.2. It is built for soccer clubs and covers fixtures, results, player profiles and a team roster. The caution is its size: 100+ active installations and no reviews at all. Nobody has road-tested it for you.
The free theme to avoid is Rookie. It is the one most older roundups still point at, because it was ThemeBoy’s own free companion theme for SportsPress and it has 3,000+ active installations and a 4.7 rating. It was last updated on 26 March 2021 and still declares WordPress 3.8 as its minimum. A theme that has shipped nothing in five years is not going to start now, and pairing it with a plugin that is actively developed is how club sites end up broken after a core update.
The soccer themes, one by one
FC United — the club site with a shop
$79 on a regular ThemeForest licence, 2,452 sales, rated 4.89 from 64 ratings, last updated 28 August 2026. Built by axiomthemes on Elementor, with SportsPress for the fixtures, results, roster and auto-calculated standings, and full WooCommerce support for the shirts and the membership fees.
It is the pick because of the combination rather than any single feature. Elementor is the builder most people already know and can hire for, the update in August 2026 says the vendor is still shipping, and 4.89 from 64 ratings is a strong score for a niche theme. Splash — the cheapest well-proven option
$59, and the best-selling theme in ThemeForest’s SportsPress category at 5,489 sales. Rated 4.40 from 115 ratings, last updated 19 May 2026. StylemixThemes bundles WPBakery Page Builder and Slider Revolution with it, and the theme is fully compatible with SportsPress rather than shipping its own match engine. It covers football, soccer, basketball and hockey from the same demos.
Two things to weigh. The 4.40 rating is the lowest of the themes here, and the builder is WPBakery, which is shortcode-based: turn the theme off later and your page content comes back as shortcode text. That is the classic page-builder lock-in, and it is the reason our page builder comparison ranks builders on what survives a switch. For a club site that will stay put for years, it matters less than $20.
Alchemists — when the club is also a publisher
$99, 2,987 sales, and the highest rating on this page at 4.94 from 140 ratings, last updated 23 August 2026. WPBakery, SportsPress, and a magazine layer on top: match reports, galleries, stat charts and a countdown to the next fixture.
The reason to pay the extra $20 over FC United is if the site is as much a publication as a club record — a supporters’ trust, a league covering several clubs, a site that will post three match reports a week. Football Club by ThemeBoy — the theme from the plugin’s author
$59 for one site with a year of updates, $119 for unlimited sites, or $299 once for unlimited sites with updates forever. Renewals are half price, and there is a 30-day money-back guarantee. It is built by ThemeBoy, who also write SportsPress, and the vendor is explicit that upgrading to SportsPress Pro is optional because the theme already includes the basic club management features.
This is the low-risk choice rather than the cheap one. One vendor is responsible for the theme and the match engine, so a compatibility bug has one owner. It does not publish sales figures, and it is a Customizer theme rather than a page-builder one, so you are trading layout freedom for a club site that behaves.
Real Soccer — the best seller, on its own rails
$79, and the highest sales count in ThemeForest’s soccer category at 5.3K. It carries its own player list, timetable, match results and match report system rather than leaning on SportsPress, which is why it looks so complete out of the box and why it is the hardest of these to leave. Buy it if you like the design and expect to stay; skip it if you want your fixture data to outlive the theme.
Khelo — the cheapest soccer-specific theme
$49 with 861 sales, the lowest price of any dedicated soccer theme in the category. Three homepage demos, one-click import, and its own points table, fixtures and match highlights. It works with WooCommerce, WPML and Contact Form 7. At $10 less than Splash and with a fifth of the sales, it is the pick when budget is the deciding constraint rather than longevity.
Big Slam — for a club with more than one sport
$89, 1.9K sales, SportsPress-based. The name suggests basketball but the SportsPress presets cover whichever sports your club actually runs, which is the point: a sports club with a football team, a netball team and a running section can keep three sets of fixtures and three tables on one site. If your club is one sport only, FC United or Splash cost less and do the same job.
Soccer Club — the free directory theme
Free from WordPress.org, version 1.4.5, updated 10 June 2026, by WP Radiant, requiring WordPress 6.0 and PHP 7.2. Fixtures, results, an event calendar, player profiles and Contact Form 7 support for registrations. Covered above under the free route: fine for a village club, but with 100+ installs and no reviews you are the test case.
What about Divi, Astra and the other multipurpose themes?
They are perfectly good WordPress themes and they cannot do a league table. That is the honest position, and it is worth stating plainly because most soccer-theme roundups pad themselves out with multipurpose themes that happen to have one sports demo.
Where they do make sense is when the site is not really a club record. A supporters’ association that wants news and a members page, an academy selling coaching sessions, a five-a-side league that runs its tables on a spreadsheet anyway — any of those is better served by a fast general theme. Divi at $89 a year covers unlimited sites, Astra’s free tier covers a small site at no cost, and both are quicker to build with than a niche theme you will fight.
The moment you want fixtures and standings, add SportsPress on top. It works with any theme; it just will not look designed for football until you style it.

For most clubs: FC United, $79. Elementor, SportsPress, WooCommerce, 2,452 sales, 4.89 from 64 ratings, updated last month. It covers the club record and the shop in one purchase, and the builder is one you can hire help for.
If $20 matters: Splash, $59. The best-selling SportsPress theme by a distance. Accept WPBakery and the 4.40 rating.
If the club publishes as much as it plays: Alchemists, $99. The best-rated theme here, with a proper editorial layer.
If you want one vendor to blame: Football Club by ThemeBoy, $59 a year or $299 lifetime. Theme and plugin from the same people, with a 30-day refund window.
If the budget is nil: SportsPress plus a free theme. Not Rookie — it has shipped nothing since March 2021.
The one to think twice about: Calcio. It is still recommended in a lot of soccer-theme lists, including the version of this page we replaced. At $69 it has 17 sales on ThemeForest. That is not a judgement on the code, but with a niche theme, sales and ratings are the only evidence you get that anyone has run it in anger.
Once you have chosen the theme
Three things decide whether the site is still working next season.
- Enter one full match day before you commit. Add a fixture, play it out, enter the result and check the league table recalculates. Whether that takes two minutes or twenty is the difference between a site the club secretary updates and a site nobody touches after August.

Will a soccer theme work for another sport?
