Four are built for gaming specifically, three are publishing themes that happen to run gaming sites better than most gaming themes do, and two are free bases. The column that matters most is the builder, because it decides what you can move to another theme later and what you pay on top.

The mistake most gaming theme roundups make is treating “gaming site” as one thing. A patch-notes blog, a five-player clan page, a studio launching one game, a Twitch creator’s hub and a bbPress community need different post types, different layouts and different amounts of builder. Set the three things below and the answer narrows to one theme, with a note when your budget and your needs do not meet.

Which builder does each gaming theme lock you into, and what does it cost?

Every gaming theme on ThemeForest advertises a bundled page builder as a saving. Read WPBakery’s own knowledge base and the saving looks different. Its update page says: if WPBakery came integrated into your theme, ask your theme provider to update it or purchase a licence directly to get automatic updates. Its support page says bundled users are not eligible for direct support, because the theme author licensed the product to them. A direct WPBakery licence costs $82 for one site.

So a $69 theme with WPBakery bundled is a $69 theme whose builder only updates when the author ships a theme release, and three of the paid picks here have gone 200 to 331 days without one. The table puts a number on it.

Two things follow. The block-editor and Elementor themes cost what their price tag says, and their builder is patched by WordPress or Elementor on WordPress.org whether or not the theme author is awake. The WPBakery themes are the ones with the deepest esports features, so if you need a tournament timetable you are accepting the dependency; the way to limit it is to buy from an author with a recent release, which today means Overworld over PlayerX. Newspaper by tagDiv is $59 with 157,352 sales, a 4.80 rating from more than 8,000 ratings and a release on 22 July 2026; its listing names WordPress 6.0 to 6.8. It is a news theme rather than a gaming theme, and that is the argument for it: 120+ prebuilt sites, a 1,300-template cloud library, AMP support and integrated bbPress, BuddyPress and WooCommerce. A gaming site that starts as a blog and grows a forum and a merch shop never has to change theme.

Gamxo: the Elementor gaming blog, and the cheapest paid pick

Suits: a gaming blog or news site whose owner already works in Elementor.

Gamxo by RadiusTheme is $49, the lowest price on this page, with 423 sales, a 4.55 rating from 11 ratings and a release on 19 July 2026; its listing names WordPress 4.9 to 7.0. It is built for Elementor with 15+ custom add-ons and 40+ layouts, and its listing also says it is Gutenberg-optimised. Dark mode, category-wise colours, four homepage demos and WooCommerce support are all in the box, and the builder it relies on is the free Elementor plugin, so there is no licence on top.

The limitation is the track record: 11 ratings is not a sample, and the listing does not mention a review scoring system, bbPress or Twitch integration. It is the right buy when Elementor is a given and the price matters.

Soledad: the review site that is not locked to a builder

Suits: a reviews site that wants scores, a dark layout and a choice of builder.

Soledad by PenciDesign is $69 with 60,424 sales, a 4.87 rating from around 1,400 ratings and a release on 21 August 2026, the most recent of any paid theme here; its listing names WordPress 6.0 to 7.0. It ships a Gaming News demo, its own Penci Review plugin for scored reviews, a dark layout, AMP support and compatibility with bbPress, BuddyPress and WooCommerce. It is optimised for the block editor and compatible with both Elementor and WPBakery, so the builder is your decision rather than the author’s.

The limitation is that nothing in it is esports-specific, and its 1,500+ customiser settings take time to learn. Buy it for a review publication, not a team.

Soledad on ThemeForest

PlayerX: the team and streamer pick

Suits: one team, one clan or one streamer who also competes.

PlayerX by Edge-Themes is $69 with 3,047 sales, a 4.82 rating from 61 ratings and a last release on 13 October 2025; its listing names WordPress 6.5 to 7.0 and WooCommerce 9 and 10. It has a Matches custom post type with Match List, Match List Small and Match Featured shortcodes plus two widgets, a Stream Box shortcode for announcing broadcasts, and Team and Team Carousel shortcodes for the roster. WPBakery is bundled and Elementor is listed as compatible.

The limitation is the release gap: 331 days at the time of reading, the longest of any theme kept here, and a bundled WPBakery licence that only updates with the theme. There is no tournament system. Read the changelog on the listing before you buy.

PlayerX on ThemeForest

Overworld: tournaments and leagues

Suits: an organisation running a league, a tournament series or several rosters.

Overworld by Edge-Themes is $85 with 1,070 sales, a 4.76 rating from 17 ratings and a release on 20 February 2026; its listing names WordPress 6.5 to 7.0. It is the only theme on this page with Tournament List, Tournament Slider and Tournament Timetable shortcodes, and it adds match lists, single-match layouts, player sliders and lists, team lists and sliders, and stream boxes and lists. WooCommerce 9 and 10 are supported for merchandise; WPBakery and Slider Revolution are bundled.

The limitation is that 17 ratings is a thin base for the most expensive theme here, and everything is built in WPBakery, so the layouts stay behind if you ever leave. The $16 over PlayerX buys the timetable, which is the piece that kills tournament sites when it has to be built by hand.

CyberPulse: esports in the block editor

Suits: a team or creator who refuses to install a page builder.

CyberPulse by _nK is $69 with 361 sales, a 4.73 rating from 15 ratings and a release on 13 January 2026; its listing names WordPress 6.3 to 6.9. It is the one gaming theme here that uses the block editor as its builder. Tournaments, matches, teams and players come from its own CyberPress plugin, a video post type covers streams, night mode switches automatically or by hand, and WooCommerce runs with an AJAX cart.

The limitation is dependency of a different kind: if the author stops maintaining CyberPress, the esports side stops with it, and 361 sales is the smallest base on this page. There is no BuddyPress or bbPress mention in the listing.

Godlike: community, forum, shop and age gate

Suits: a community site, or a studio presenting one game, that also sells things.

Godlike by _nK is $69 with 1,665 sales and the best rating on this page, 4.91 from 91 ratings, last released on 21 December 2025; its listing names WordPress 6.3 to 6.9. It supports BuddyPress for profiles and activity, bbPress for forums and WooCommerce for a shop, and its age-verification gate can be applied to individual pages and posts rather than the whole site, which matters when age-rated titles sit next to general content. It ships 27+ shortcodes, four navigation styles and 250+ customiser options.

Kadence: the free start for any site type

Suits: anyone with no theme budget, whatever the site is.

Kadence is free on WordPress.org at version 1.5.2, released 24 July 2026, with more than 500,000 active installs and a 4.9 rating from 453 reviews; it requires WordPress 6.3 and PHP 7.4. Header and footer builders are in the free version and it is a block-editor theme, so the builder is WordPress itself. A dark palette, a Twitch embed and a roster page are all ordinary blocks.

Astra: the studio landing page, free or with a paid template

Suits: a game studio or a single-game launch site, and Elementor users starting free.

Astra is free on WordPress.org at version 4.13.11, released 8 September 2026, with more than 1 million active installs and a 4.9 rating from 6,522 reviews; it requires WordPress 5.3. It works with the block editor or free Elementor. Its Game Dev Studio starter template is the one design on this page drawn specifically for a studio, a dark layout with colourful imagery that imports for Elementor or the block editor.

Which WordPress gaming theme should you choose?

For most gaming sites, Newspaper at $59. Most “gaming websites” are blogs or news sites, and a publishing theme with 157,352 sales and a release in July 2026 beats a niche theme with 400 sales. Take Gamxo at $49 if Elementor is already your builder, or Soledad at $69 if you want scored reviews and a free choice of builder.

If you run a team, PlayerX at $69; if you run tournaments, Overworld at $85; if you want neither WPBakery nor Elementor, CyberPulse at $69. These are the only three themes here with match content types, and the builder column above is the real difference between them.

If the site is a community with forums, Godlike at $69, for BuddyPress, bbPress, WooCommerce and a per-page age gate in one theme. If the budget is zero, Kadence or Astra, and accept that the gaming look is yours to build.

Skip Blackfyre and Arcane, the two Skywarrior themes that still fill older lists. Blackfyre is $64 with 2,712 sales and a 4.25 rating from 231 ratings, but its last release was 6 February 2023 and its listing names WordPress 6.1 as the tested version, 1,311 days before 9 September 2026. Arcane is $64 with 1,543 sales and a 4.0 rating from 84, last released 7 November 2022 for WordPress 6.0. Both bundle a builder that has not been refreshed in more than three years.
