Best WordPress Schema Plugin: Do You Even Need One?

Most sites do not need a WordPress schema plugin at all, because the SEO plugin they already run outputs the markup: Rank Math alone gives you 18 predefined schema types for free, including Product, Recipe, Event and LocalBusiness. If you run Yoast SEO or All in One SEO Lite and need anything beyond Article and breadcrumbs, add Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP, the free plugin with 100,000+ installs and 35+ types, rather than paying. Pay only when you need rules that apply markup across the whole site or custom JSON-LD with no code, and then Schema Pro at $69 a year for unlimited sites is the cheapest of the paid tools. Do you need a WordPress schema plugin if you already run an SEO plugin?

Usually not. Every major SEO plugin writes a base graph on every page — WebSite, WebPage, Organisation or Person, breadcrumbs and Article on posts — and that is what most “schema markup WordPress plugin” searches are really after. The question is only what happens when you need a type beyond that base, and the honest answer differs sharply by plugin. The table records what each free tier outputs for the six needs people actually have, read from each vendor’s own documentation.

Two things stand out. Rank Math free covers five of the six needs, which is why it is the answer for most people, and AIOSEO Lite covers the fewest: its own Lite page lists breadcrumb, sitelinks search box and person or organisation schema, with the 18-type schema generator starting at the Basic plan. WPNeon runs Rank Math, and in that install the whole thing lives in two places: Rank Math SEO → Titles & Meta sets a default Schema Type per post type, and the Schema tab in the post editor’s Rank Math box opens the Schema Generator to change or add a type for one post. The Custom Schema tab is there too, and it only prompts for an upgrade.

Which rich results does Google still show in 2026?

A schema plugin is only worth money if Google does something with the markup, and Google has been retiring result types for three years. The plugin listings have not caught up: Rank Math, SASWP, Schema Pro, SEOPress and All In One Schema Rich Snippets all still offer FAQ or HowTo types. The dates are from Google’s own Search Central documentation updates and blog.

• FAQ — gone. Limited to “well-known, authoritative government and health websites” from 8 August 2023; a deprecation notice went on the documentation on 8 May 2026 and the documentation was removed on 15 June 2026.
• HowTo — gone. Desktop-only from 8 August 2023; Google stated “As of September 13, Google Search no longer shows How-to rich results on desktop, which means this result type is now deprecated.”
• Course info, estimated salary, learning video, special announcement, vehicle listing — gone. Documentation removed 9 September 2025.
• Practice problems — gone. Documentation removed 6 January 2026. Sitelinks search box — gone since 29 November 2024.

One rule inside the surviving list catches review sites: Google states that pages using LocalBusiness or any Organization type are “ineligible for star review feature” when the entity controls the reviews about itself, including through an embedded Google or Facebook reviews widget. Stars on your own business page are not something any plugin can buy you.

Which WordPress schema plugin fits your site?

Pick the SEO plugin you already run and what the markup is for, then tick free only if that is a hard limit. The answer names one thing to install, or nothing, and says when a second plugin would double up your markup.

Rank Math SEO

For any site that would rather not run a second plugin for markup. Version 1.0.278, updated on 9 September 2026, 4 million+ active installs, 4.8 out of 5 from 7,498 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.4.

The deciding capability is how much is free: the pricing page lists 18 predefined schema types in the free plan, the knowledge base names Article, Book, Course, Event, Job Posting, Person, Product, Recipe, Restaurant, Service, Software Application and Video among them, plus a Local SEO module and automatic Product markup when WooCommerce is present. In WPNeon’s install the per-post Schema tab shows the type, fields and a Google validation link. The rating on Product, Book and Software types is what a review site needs.

The limitation is the line PRO draws. The free version’s Custom Schema tab only prompts for an upgrade, and templates, conditional markup, multiple schemas per page and import from other sites are all PRO, at €7.99 a month billed annually as displayed. FAQ and HowTo remain in the free type list although Google shows neither rich result.

Yoast SEO

For a blog that needs Article, breadcrumbs and an organisation graph and nothing more. Version 28.4, updated in September 2026, 10 million+ active installs, 4.8 out of 5 from 27,819 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.4.

What decides it is the documented base graph: Yoast’s developer portal says every page attempts to output Organization, WebSite and WebPage, with BreadcrumbList and ImageObject, Article on single posts, Person when the site represents a person, and FAQPage or HowTo only when the matching block is used. That graph is clean and well linked, which is why so many schema plugins list “Yoast compatibility” as a feature.

The limitation is everything beyond it. There is no Recipe, Review, Event or Product type in free Yoast; Local SEO ships only inside Premium at $118.80 a year ex VAT, and Product markup is Yoast WooCommerce SEO at $178.80 a year. Premium’s own schema additions are organisation properties and a schema aggregation feature rather than new types.

All in One SEO

For a site already on an AIOSEO plan, since the schema generator is paid. Version 5.0.1.1, updated in August 2026, 2 million+ active installs, 4.7 out of 5 from 5,204 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.2.

The deciding fact is on AIOSEO’s own Lite page, which lists the free schema as breadcrumb, sitelinks search box and person or organisation pages, and its Lite-versus-Pro table, which marks the Schema Generator as Pro. The generator itself is broad once paid: Article, Book, Course, Event, FAQ, HowTo, Job Posting, Movie, Music, Person, Product, Product Review, Recipe, Service, Software Application, Video and Web Page, with Local Business at Plus, WooCommerce and Event at Pro and Job Listing at Elite.

The limitation is that its WordPress.org description reads as if FAQ, product and recipe schema come with the free plugin. They do not. Basic is €49.50 a year for one site as displayed, and the sitelinks search box it lists for Lite is a rich result Google removed in November 2024.

All in One SEO on WordPress.org

SEOPress

For someone who wants a real schema editor inside the SEO plugin for the least money. Version 10.2, updated on 3 September 2026, 300,000+ active installs, 4.8 out of 5 from 1,253 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.4.

The deciding capability is PRO’s editor: Article, LocalBusiness, Service, How-to, FAQ, Course, Recipe, SoftwareApplication, Video, Event, Product, JobPosting, Review, ProfilePage and a custom schema type, with a live preview, automatic application under AND/OR conditions and WooCommerce product schema with GTIN, MPN and brand. PRO is $49 a year for one site, $59 for five and $149 for unlimited.

The limitation is the free tier: its listing names only Organization knowledge-graph data with address and legal fields. On free SEOPress you are in the same position as on free Yoast, with fewer pieces documented.

Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP

For anyone on Yoast, AIOSEO Lite or SEOPress free who needs LocalBusiness, Recipe, Product, Review or Event without paying. Version 1.66, updated on 9 September 2026, 100,000+ active installs, 4.5 out of 5 from 252 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 5.6.20.

The deciding capability is breadth at no cost: over 35 types free, including Article, BlogPosting, NewsArticle, Book, Course, HowTo, Recipe, Product, VideoObject, Event, JobPosting, LocalBusiness, Person, Review and Service, with conditional display fields that apply a type to chosen post types or categories, a setup wizard, AMP output and 11 blocks. No other free plugin on this page comes close.

The limitation is what sits behind the Pro line and the extensions. Reviews pulled from 75+ platforms and priority support need Pro at $99 a year for one site; WooCommerce automation and FAQ-plugin compatibility are $29 extensions; and Yoast compatibility is listed among premium features, so on the free version check one page for duplicate items.

Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP on WordPress.org

Schema Pro

For an agency or a multi-site owner who wants one rule set applied everywhere, independent of the SEO plugin. Sold by Brainstorm Force, not on WordPress.org; $69 a year (regular price $79) or $229 once (regular $249), both for unlimited sites, no free version.

The deciding capability is the display rule: any of its 23 types — the pricing page lists review, local business, article, service, product, podcast, recipe, FAQ, video object, event, course and job posting among them — is applied by post type, taxonomy or specific page, with fields mapped to post data or custom fields including ACF, and a live testing link. On five client sites that is one licence and one setup pattern.

The limitation is that on a single site with Rank Math it adds nothing the free plugin does not already do, and its FAQ type targets a rich result Google withdrew in May 2026. Buy it for the rules and the licence terms, not the type count.

All In One Schema Rich Snippets

For a review blog on Yoast that wants a rendered review box with the markup, free. Version 1.7.9, updated on 9 September 2026, 30,000+ active installs, 4.0 out of 5 from 162 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.4.

The deciding capability is simplicity: eight types — Review, Event, Person, Product, Recipe, Software Application, Video, Article — each a form under the post that also prints a summary box in the content. It is from Brainstorm Force, the maker of Schema Pro.

The limitation is the 4.0 rating, the lowest of the maintained plugins here, and a Pro tier whose 24 extra types lead with FAQ and How-To, both rich results Google no longer shows. There are no site-wide rules; every post is marked up by hand.

All In One Schema Rich Snippets on WordPress.org

WPSSO Core

For a developer who wants the whole schema.org vocabulary rather than a curated list. Version 22.5.3, updated on 4 September 2026, 4,000+ active installs, 4.6 out of 5 from 306 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 7.4.33.

The deciding capability is the free edition’s claim of over 500 types and sub-types, including WooCommerce offers for Books, Events, Products, Product Groups and Services, alongside the Open Graph and Twitter card tags it started life with. Premium is a one-time $49 per site and adds automatic data retrieval from services such as YouTube, Vimeo, Gravatar and Judge.me reviews rather than more types.

The limitation is the install base — 4,000+ is a fraction of the others here — and a settings surface built for people who already know which sub-type they want. It is the least beginner-shaped plugin on the page.

Schema App Structured Data

For an enterprise buying a managed structured-data service, with the plugin as the delivery mechanism. Version 2.3.2, updated on 9 September 2026, 7,000+ active installs, 4.1 out of 5 from 36 reviews, tested up to WordPress 7.1, requires PHP 5.4.

The free plugin generates default markup for pages, posts, authors and categories, adds video markup for embedded YouTube videos and lets you edit the JSON-LD. Everything that makes Schema App distinctive — the Editor, the Highlighter for markup at scale and a customer success manager — needs a subscription.

The limitation is the price model: the pricing page offers no tiers, only a custom quote based on site size and complexity, a one-time setup fee, a 12-month minimum term and no free trial. For a small site it is the wrong tool; for a large one it is a procurement decision, not a plugin choice.

Schema App Structured Data on WordPress.org

Five names from older lists are not compared. WP SEO Structured Data Schema was closed on WordPress.org on 4 May 2026 for a security issue. WP Review, the MyThemeShop review plugin, was closed on 9 May 2025, also for a security issue, after five years without an update. WP Product Review by Themeisle was closed on 25 August 2021 at the author’s request. Schema by Hesham Zebida is still listed but was last updated in 2025, is tested only to WordPress 6.8.8 and carries the directory’s warning that it may no longer be maintained. WP Rich Snippets’ vendor site did not respond when checked in September 2026 and the plugin is widely reported as abandoned by its developer.

How do you test your schema markup?

Two tools, both free, and they answer different questions. Google’s Rich Results Test is, in Google’s words, the tool “to see which Google rich results can be generated by the structured data on your page”. Paste a URL, and if it reports no eligible items for a type you added, the type is either invalid or not one Google shows. The Schema Markup Validator validates “all Schema.org-based structured data that’s embedded in web pages, without Google feature specific warnings”, which is the one to use for types Google ignores but other consumers read.

Run one page of each type through the Rich Results Test after installing or changing anything. The failure to look for is duplication: an SEO plugin and a schema plugin each writing an Article or Product item with slightly different values. Fix it by switching off one source for that post type, never by leaving both.

Which WordPress schema plugin should you choose?

For most people, none. If you run Rank Math, its free 18 types, Local SEO module and WooCommerce detection cover articles, local businesses, products, recipes and rated reviews already. If you run Yoast and only publish articles, Yoast already writes the graph.

If you run Yoast, AIOSEO Lite or SEOPress free and need LocalBusiness, Recipe, Product, Review or Event, Schema & Structured Data for WP & AMP. It is free, has 35+ types with conditional rules, and was updated in September 2026. Check one page for duplicate items and turn off the SEO plugin’s type for that post type.

If you need rules across many sites or a JSON-LD builder, Schema Pro at $69 a year for unlimited sites, or SEOPress PRO at $49 for one. Rank Math users get the same from Rank Math PRO without a second plugin. Skip anything bought for FAQ or HowTo rich results, which Google stopped showing in May 2026 and September 2023, and skip the closed plugins named above.

Does Google still show FAQ and HowTo rich results?

How do I add schema markup to WordPress without a plugin?
