Rank Math vs Yoast SEO: Which Should You Use?

The short version
Use Rank Math if you run more than one site or want redirects, multiple focus keywords and a schema builder without paying: its free tier includes all three, and Rank Math Pro covers unlimited personal sites for about €108 a year on renewal. Use Yoast if you run one site and want the plugin with 10+ million installs, a readability check, and a Premium tier ($118.80 a year, one site) that bundles Local, News and Video SEO. Both are rated 4.8 on WordPress.org and both were updated within the four days before we checked.

Yoast SEO has been the default WordPress SEO plugin for well over a decade. Rank Math, launched in 2018 by the team behind MyThemeShop (affiliate link), took a different route: put most of what Yoast charges for into the free plugin, and sell rank tracking and agency features on top. Seven years on, they are the two most-installed SEO plugins on WordPress.org. This page compares what each actually does today, what each costs, and, because most of the searches that land here ask it, where each one stores its data in the database.

Rank Math’s pricing page displayed euro prices when we read it on 4 September 2026; renewal figures are the page’s own “Renews at … per month + taxes” line. Yoast’s price is the figure shown on yoast.com the same day.
Two figures nobody else publishes
Reviews per million installs. Yoast has 27,819 reviews against 10+ million installs, about 2,800 per million. Rank Math has 7,498 against 4+ million, about 1,900 per million. Yoast’s users are nearly half again as likely to leave a review, and 846 of those reviews (3.0 percent) are one-star, with a five-star share of 93.4 percent — that breakdown was recorded on 2 September 2026 and we did not re-read it on 4 September. WordPress.org did not show us Rank Math’s star breakdown either time, so we cannot give the same split.
Cost per site at three sites. Yoast Premium is licensed per site, so three personal sites cost $356.40 a year before any bulk discount. Rank Math Pro covers unlimited personal sites for €107.88 a year on renewal, so the same three sites cost about €36 each. At one site the two are within a few dollars of each other; at two sites Rank Math is already half the price. For an agency, Rank Math Business covers 100 client sites for €299.88 in the first year and €335.88 on renewal, which is €3.36 per site per year at the renewal rate.
Where each plugin stores its data (postmeta keys)
This section exists because the most common search that reaches this page is not “which is better” but a developer query: which postmeta key holds Rank Math’s focus keyword. We read the keys from a live WordPress database on 4 September 2026, on a site that has run both plugins.

The difference that matters: Yoast’s keys start with an underscore, which WordPress treats as protected meta, so they stay out of the Custom Fields panel and out of the REST API unless the plugin exposes them. Rank Math’s keys do not, so they are visible in Custom Fields and writable by any tool with edit rights. That suits bulk edits by script, and it is why an AI assistant connected through an MCP server can read and set rank_math_title directly; our audit of WordPress MCP server packages covers which ones to trust with that access. One trap from the same database: when both plugins have been installed at some point, both sets of keys remain in postmeta. Whichever plugin is active reads only its own, so a title set in the other plugin’s key is silently ignored.
Both plugins import from the other. Rank Math’s setup wizard offers a Yoast import that maps titles, descriptions, focus keywords and robots settings; Yoast’s import tool under Tools, Import and Export lists Rank Math among its sources. Run the import once, check ten posts by hand, then deactivate the old plugin. Leaving both active produces duplicate meta tags and two sitemaps.
What the free tiers actually do
Content analysis
Yoast scores each post with two traffic lights, SEO and readability, against one focus keyphrase. Rank Math scores out of 100 against up to five keywords and skips readability. Neither score predicts rankings; both are checklists that the title, description, headings and alt text mention the keyword. Yoast’s readability check is the one feature Rank Math has no equivalent for.
Schema
Rank Math’s free schema builder lets you set Article, Product, Recipe, FAQ, How-to, Event, Course, Software and other types per post and edit fields. Yoast free generates Article, Organization or Person, WebSite and Breadcrumb schema automatically, lets you switch the page and article type per post, and offers FAQ and How-to as blocks; adding Product, Recipe or Course schema with editable fields is not a free-tier feature. If you need those types without paying, Rank Math is the one that does it.
Redirects and 404s
Rank Math includes a redirect manager and a 404 monitor in the free plugin. Yoast’s redirect manager is Premium only, and it does not monitor 404s. This is the single biggest functional gap between the free tiers.
Search Console and Analytics
Rank Math free connects to Search Console and Analytics and shows queries, impressions and positions per post in the dashboard. Yoast free verifies the site with Search Console but does not pull the data in. If you run Site Kit by Google, as this site does, the Rank Math report is a duplicate and can be switched off.
Sitemaps, breadcrumbs and image SEO
Equivalent on sitemaps and breadcrumbs: both generate an XML sitemap index and both output breadcrumbs. Rank Math adds automatic alt text from the filename, a link counter and an external-link attribute setting (add nofollow or sponsored site-wide); Yoast does not.
What the paid tiers add
Rank Math Pro (€7.99 a month billed annually ex VAT, renewing at €8.99 a month, unlimited personal sites) adds a keyword rank tracker for 500 keywords, Google Trends in the editor, advanced schema templates, video sitemaps, multiple-location local SEO, WooCommerce and EDD schema, and priority support. The Business and Agency tiers change the site count (100 and 500 client sites) and the keyword allowance (10,000 and 50,000). Our Rank Math Pro review goes through the rank tracker in detail.
Yoast SEO Premium ($118.80 a year ex VAT, one site) adds the redirect manager, up to five related keyphrases, internal linking suggestions, an orphaned-content filter, AI-drafted titles and descriptions, and, since the bundle change, the Local SEO, News SEO and Video SEO plugins that used to be sold separately, plus one seat for the Google Docs add-on and Yoast SEO Academy. If you need Video or News SEO on one site, that bundle is worth more than the headline price suggests.
WooCommerce SEO
Both plugins handle product titles, descriptions and Product schema. Rank Math’s free tier writes Product schema with price, availability and rating from WooCommerce data; its Pro tier adds brand, GTIN and variation schema. Yoast’s WooCommerce SEO is a separate paid add-on, not part of Premium at the price above. For a store on a budget, Rank Math free covers more; for a store already on Yoast Premium, budget for the add-on rather than switching.
Where Rank Math loses
1. It asks for an account, and the setup wizard is long
The wizard nudges you to connect a Rank Math account before showing settings. You can skip it, but the prompt returns. Yoast’s configuration is optional and shorter.
2. Feature count is not the same as focus
Rank Math ships modules for local SEO, WooCommerce, AMP, bbPress, BuddyPress, instant indexing, a 404 monitor and more. Each is a switch, but the default install turns many on, and a site that only needs titles and a sitemap ends up with a heavier admin than it needs. Disable what you do not use on day one.
3. Fewer reviews, and no readability check
7,498 reviews against 27,819 is a smaller evidence base, and there is no equivalent of Yoast’s readability analysis. If your editor relies on the Flesch score, that is a real loss.
4. Euro pricing and annual-only billing
The pricing page we read showed euros with no monthly option; every tier is billed annually, and the renewal is 12 to 18 percent above the first-year price. Budget for the renewal figure, not the headline.
Where Yoast loses
1. Redirects cost $118.80 a year
The redirect manager is the feature most sites end up needing, and it is the one Yoast keeps behind Premium. Rank Math gives it away.
2. One keyphrase in the free tier
A post that targets “rank math vs yoast” and “yoast vs rank math” can only be scored against one of them. Rank Math free scores against five.
3. Per-site licensing
At two sites Premium costs $237.60 a year before bulk discounts; Rank Math Pro is €107.88 for unlimited personal sites. The gap widens with every site.
4. Schema editing needs Premium or add-ons
Yoast’s automatic schema is good and rarely wrong, but adding Product, Recipe or Course schema with editable fields is not a free-tier feature.
Which one to install
One site, one editor, no redirects to manage: Yoast free, and Premium if you need redirects or Video or News SEO on that site. More than one site, a store, or redirects and schema without paying: Rank Math free, and Pro if you want the rank tracker. Already on one of them with no complaint: stay. The plugin choice moves rankings far less than the titles you write with it. How much does Yoast SEO Premium cost?
$118.80 a year excluding VAT for one site, read from yoast.com on 4 September 2026. That price now includes the Local SEO, News SEO and Video SEO plugins, one seat for the Google Docs add-on, Yoast SEO Academy and 24/7 support. Extra sites need extra subscriptions, with bulk discounts, and agencies above 100 sites get custom pricing.
Can I switch from Yoast to Rank Math without losing my titles and descriptions?
Yes. Rank Math’s setup wizard detects Yoast data and imports titles, meta descriptions, focus keywords, robots settings and redirects into its own postmeta keys. Check a sample of posts after the import, then deactivate Yoast. Yoast can import from Rank Math in the other direction under Tools, Import and Export.
Which postmeta key does Rank Math use for the focus keyword?
rank_math_focus_keyword, stored in wp_postmeta without a leading underscore, so it shows in the Custom Fields panel. Multiple keywords are stored in that one key separated by commas. Yoast stores its focus keyphrase in _yoast_wpseo_focuskw, which is protected meta and hidden from Custom Fields. Read from a live database on 4 September 2026.

I personally prefer Rank Math as it has great support for it’s users even though it’s a free plugin. One thing I don’t like is, there is not any support for Google News and some Schema Type is not available and we can’t use multiple Schema Type in a single post. But overall it’s good in comparison with Yoast and other SEO plugins.

I tested Both plugins and i can see Rank math is easy to setup, make things easy to newbie, by how quickly setup his own blog.
In the other hand what i don’t like in Yoast every time i open my dashboard there is an update for it and even and there is no a complete documentation for it.
If you want a good setting you need to buy their service. and even i think yoast developer’s they don’t understand how google work by using the old method by focus on meta (title + description and focus keyword). and keyword ratio.
Now we need something follow google update and advice us how we can setting a good article or page structure and gain google trust.
This is just my view about the both plugins

I set up Rank Maths on my website and i noticed all my articles disappeared on Google. Secondly, Google stopped indexing my news articles. I had no choice than to uninstall it. Will try again but honestly, I’m worried about my website.

Good comparison! Yoast SEO vs Rank Math. Since July 2019 onwards am using Rank Match, it was migrated from Yoast SEO and I don’t see many issues on it. The only problem I faced so far was when you run SEO Analyzer 2nd time the site may turn to 500 error which you need to remove the “ank_math_seo_analysis_results” entry from DB to restore back to normal. They are trying their level best to resolve this error permanently but so far not fixed yet. Let us hope for the best! I truly recommended Rank Math in my personal opinion.

I have been using Rank Math since the beginning and I feel it as much more user-friendly and has more features than the free version of Yoast SEO. Overall, I feel Rank Math beats Yoast SEO and I recommend using this than the Yoast SEO.

I use Rank Math on my website in Russian and it’s quite frustrating, that this plugin does not catch the keywords with Russian language specifics, and even doe not see it in the post slug, even if it properly transliterated.
The same problem with Yoast… Looks like both of these plugins are good enough, and Rank Math is doing a promotional campaign.
Despite all of this I prefer Rank Math since it works well with schema markup in my theme, and Yoast has conflicts in it.

Rank Math SEO Plugins is an excellent Yoast’s alternative. It has to build its audience and needs some testing, but it provides many features that are usually available in Premium versions of other WordPress SEO plugins.

I was using yoast and it’s a fantastic plugin. But from the last 6 to 7 month I have moved to rank math and it gives me unbelievable results. I think when it’s comes to SEO, one should choose wisely bcoz, good seo can boost you in google result.

I’m using rank math plugin on my current website it’s Really great and provides awsome features like 404 monitor, redirection, rich snippet. the bad thing is rich snippet is not working yet.

Rich Snippet is now offered by both Rank Math and Yoast Free.
However Rank Math also provides the option to enable/ disable it anytime while Yoast doesn’t.

We use Yoast for SEO. We are completely happy with its performance. Yes, rank math is gaining more popularity in recent times but I think for beginners Yoast is the best to use and understand more about focused keyword.

I’ve been using Yoast for years. It’s done a great job for me and no real problems with it. However, I’ve been recommended Rank Math and I’m thinking about giving it a try. We are an agency and changing tried and tested plugins with our team and all our websites is time consuming, so I’m still on the fence with it. Is it really that much better? What about page loading times? Yoast Pro can be quite heavy on loading times, is Rank Math much faster? I’ll do some more research and do some more testes before we decide to change over!

I have been using Rank math for 6 Months now, and there are 4 new site that use it.
Over all i have seen the page load time has a significant difference.
Rank math is lighter and faster and fully loaded as compared to Yoast.

This is a mindblowing post for SEO plugins. I also used RankMath. A few days ago I used the tool for my 2 sites. RankMath is a great tool. I agree Yoast is also a good plugin. But I like RankMath, it’s work is very fast and point to point. That’s why I like most RankMath.

Based on the analysis i think Rank Math outweighs Yoast and I will definitely give it a try. Even Yoast premium is not that good due to many technical glitches especially with regards to indexing images of a website.
