For almost 10 years I’ve been using Akismet to ward off spam comments that are often run by bots. So if the bot will put down its spam comments, Akismet will hold it first and put it in the spam comment category (I can also moderate if the comment can be published or not).

I used AntiSpam Bee which is pretty good as a free alternative for Akismet.
Another premium alternative I would like to suggest is OOPSpam Anti-Spam. It works similar to Akismet, however, they use modern techniques like machine learning, spam score which works great against manual spammers as well as bots.

I want to tell you guys about the plugin WPBruiser. The free plugin is not that good but if someone purchases the pro version it can solve all the issues. For example, people like me use contact form 7 a lot. So, with the pro version, you can protect your site from contact form 7 form submissions. And if you want someone to fill the form from just few countries then you can whitelist or blacklist countries too. So, I think WPBruiser Pro is the best plugin which is the alternative to Akismet but it cost $29 for the pro version for unlimited websites.
